Case Study: Why I use Astah for teaching

When I started modeling systems with UML in the 90s,
the first case tool I used was Rational Rose. Its use was a little difficult, but it was a very complete tool and there were not many good competitors.
The big problem was its price.
When I started teaching, I decided to look for a free tool that I could recommend to my students. I found Star UML and the JUDE Community.
(JUDE Community is Astah’s predecessor.)
I had no doubts about recommending Astah over StarUML
Between the two, I had no doubts about recommending the JUDE Community (Astah).
In it I found numerous facilities, it was simpler to use, it offered a good user experience for being intuitive, it met all the basic needs for those who were starting to model systems and still had the possibility of more advanced tools in the professional version, such as consolidating various projects.
For the teacher, this characteristic is very good, since it allows us to gather works of several students on the same theme in a single project.
Astah is an excellent choice
In the case of students, I had the opportunity to teach classes in the business administration course at Faculdade IBMEC-RJ in elective courses, such as systems development and systems intelligence.
At PUC-Rio I teach User Interface Design and Final Design in Analysis and Systems Design classes, a University extension course.
In all cases, I did not see any difficulty with the students using Astah.
Who uses Astah professionally finds several possibilities for, among other things:
- Customize your diagrams and present them clearly;
- Document your project;
- Share solutions in group work

Meu nome é Lúcia Aparecida Miceli, MSc e atualmente leciono Projeto de Interface de usuário e Projeto final no curso de análise e projeto de sistemas da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro.
Quando comecei a modelar sistemas com UML nos anos 90, a primeira ferramenta case que usei foi o Rational Rose. Seu uso era um pouco difícil, mas era uma ferramenta bastante completa e não havia muitos bons concorrentes. Grande problema era seu preço. Quando comecei a lecionar, comecei a procurar uma ferramenta free que pudesse indicar aos alunos. Encontrei a star UML e a JUDE Community, antecessora do Astah. Entre as duas não tive dúvidas em indicar a JUDE Community. Nele encontrei inúmeras facilidades, era mais simples de usar, oferecia boa experiência ao usuário por ser intuitiva, atendia a todas a necessidades básicas para quem estava começando a modelar sistemas e ainda tinha a possibilidade de ferramentas mais avançadas na versão professional, como consolidar vários projetos. Para o professor esta característica é muito boa, já que permite reunir trabalhos de vários alunos sobre o mesmo tema.
No caso dos alunos, tive a oportunidade de acompanhar turmas do curso de administração de empresas da Faculdade IBMEC-RJ em disciplinas eletivas de desenvolvimento de sistemas e Inteligência de sistemas. Na PUC-Rio acompanho turmas de Análise e Projetos de Sistemas, um curso de extensão Universitária. Em ambos os casos não vi, nos alunos, nenhuma dificuldade
em usar o Astah.
Quem utiliza o Astah profissionalmente encontra possibilidades diversas para, entre outras
coisas:
- Customizar seus diagramas e apresentá-los de forma clara;
- Documentar seu projeto;
- Compartilhar soluções em trabalhos em grupo.
O Astah é uma excelente escolha.
