Let AI Do the Groundwork.
Deliver Better Designs, Faster.
Create UML and SysML diagrams with AI in Astah.
AI drafts the diagram in minutes. You get a real model you can keep editing, and more time for the decisions only you can make. Use the AI service or AI coding agent you already use.
AI in Astah at work: diagrams from prompts, PlantUML, requirements and code, plus design reviews. Edited to shorten waiting time.
Model faster. Decide better.
AI speeds up every step, from the first draft to the final review. You spend your time on the decisions, and deliver better designs sooner.
What you can do with AI in Astah
Select a use case to see a prompt you can copy and the steps to try it in your own project.
New: follow one project from requirements to code, with a class diagram, a design review, Java code and a database design document.
Create UML diagrams with AI
- Open your project in Astah and click the [Chat Copilot] tab.
- Copy this prompt, edit the requirements, and send it:
Read the requirements below and create a UML class diagram with the main classes, attributes, operations, relationships and multiplicities. Use English names. Requirements: - Members can borrow up to 5 books at a time. - Each book has an ISBN, a title and one or more authors. - A loan records the borrow date, the due date and the return date. - Members who return books late pay a fine. Model "up to 5 books" as a multiplicity. Do not create classes for basic types such as String or Date. - Review the diagram and ask for changes in the same conversation, for example:
Add a Reservation class so that members can reserve books that are on loan.
Tip
If your requirements are already clear, describe everything in a single prompt, including the level of detail you need, and review the result once. If you are still exploring ideas, start with the main classes and add details step by step.
You can also start from other diagrams: use case, sequence, activity, state machine and, in Astah Professional, ER diagrams. See the supported diagrams and the AI Chat Copilot guide.
Available with AI Chat Copilot in Astah Professional and Astah UML.
Turn PlantUML into editable UML diagrams with AI
- Ask your AI service for a diagram in PlantUML, or use PlantUML you already have:
Write a PlantUML class diagram for a library system with Member, Book, Author and Loan. A member can borrow up to 5 books at a time. - In an AI client connected to Astah through the MCP server, such as Claude Code, import it and refine it in natural language:
Import this PlantUML into Astah as a class diagram named "Library - Domain Model". Then add a Reservation class linked to Member and Book. - Edit the model by hand in Astah, for example add a class, an attribute or a relationship. When you need text again, for example for a document or a pull request, export it with your changes:
Export the class diagram "Library - Domain Model" from Astah as PlantUML, including the changes I made by hand.
Check before you use it
- Do the relationships and multiplicities match what you intended after the import?
- Is Astah open with the right project before you ask the AI to import or export?
Supported for class, use case, sequence, activity and state machine diagrams. To import or export PlantUML without AI, use the PlantUML Plugin. For setup, see the MCP server guide.
Available with the MCP server in Astah Professional and Astah UML.
See the structure and flow of existing code
- In Astah, choose Tools > AI Code Reverse… and enter the folder that contains your source code in Target Directory.
- For a class diagram, select Class Diagram, paste this prompt into User Prompt and click OK:
Create a class diagram for the library package. Show the classes with their attributes, operations and relationships, including interfaces and inheritance. Do not create classes for built-in types such as str, date or list, and do not show constructors such as __init__.This video has been edited to shorten waiting time. Generation time and results vary depending on the AI service and model you use. - For a sequence diagram, select Sequence Diagram, enter the method to start from in Entry Methods, and set Max Call Hierarchy Depth (a smaller value keeps the diagram easier to read). Then paste a prompt and click OK:
Entry Methods: LibraryService.borrow_book(str, str, date) User Prompt: Create a sequence diagram for LibraryService.borrow_book(). Show the main successful flow: find the member and the book, check can_borrow() and is_available(), create the Loan and send the confirmation. Label every message and show return values as reply messages. This video has been edited to shorten waiting time. Generation time and results vary depending on the AI service and model you use.
Tip
Start with one package or one method rather than a whole codebase. A focused scope gives clearer diagrams and faster results, and you can widen it once you see what you need.
Supported languages include Java, C#, Python, TypeScript, Go, C++, JavaScript, Kotlin, Swift, PHP, Ruby, Rust and other languages. For details, see the AI Code Reverse guide.
Available with AI Code Reverse in Astah Professional and Astah UML.
Review and document a design with AI
- Open the diagram in Astah and click the [Chat Copilot] tab.
- Ask for a review without changing the model:
Review the class diagram "Library - Domain Model". List missing elements, unclear relationships and naming inconsistencies, most important first. Do not change the model yet. - Apply the suggestions you agree with, by number:
Apply suggestions 2, 3 and 4. - Document the design for people who do not read UML:
Add a note to the diagram that summarizes this model in plain language for team members who do not read UML.
Tip
Tell the AI what to focus on, such as your naming rules or a standard your team follows. A focused review gives fewer, more useful findings than a general one.
Available with AI Chat Copilot or the MCP server in all four products.
Create SysML diagrams with AI
- Open your project in Astah SysML or Astah System Safety and click the [Chat Copilot] tab.
- Copy your requirements from your specification or spreadsheet, including the header row. For example:
ID Name Text Derived from REQ-001 Autonomous Delivery The robot shall deliver parcels to the recipient without human control. REQ-002 Payload Capacity The robot shall carry a payload of up to 20 kg. REQ-001 REQ-011 Obstacle Detection The robot shall detect obstacles within 5 m. REQ-010 REQ-012 Emergency Stop The robot shall stop within 1 second after an obstacle is detected within 1 m. REQ-011 … 10 requirements in the example - Paste your requirements into this prompt and send it:
Create a SysML requirement diagram from the requirements below. Use the ID, name and text of each row, and use the Derived from column for derive relationships. Show all relationships on the diagram. [Paste your requirements here, including the header row] - Create the system structure:
Create a SysML block definition diagram for the delivery robot with the blocks DeliveryRobot, Chassis, DriveSystem, BatteryPack, CargoCompartment, NavigationController, Sensor and CommunicationModule. DeliveryRobot is composed of the other blocks. - Trace the requirements to the design:
In the requirement diagram, add satisfy relationships from each block to the requirements it fulfills.
Tip
Paste one group of requirements at a time, for example one subsystem, and create one diagram per group. Smaller diagrams are easier to check and keep up to date.
In version 11, AI Chat Copilot in Astah SysML and Astah System Safety works with SysML diagrams. See the supported diagrams.
Available with AI Chat Copilot in Astah SysML and Astah System Safety.

Frequently asked questions
Which AI features does Astah have?
#
Astah has three AI features: AI Chat Copilot for creating and refining diagrams in conversation, a built-in MCP server that lets external AI clients read and edit Astah models, and AI Code Reverse for generating class and sequence diagrams from source code.
Do I need an API key?
#
Yes. AI Chat Copilot and AI Code Reverse connect to the AI service you choose with your own API key. Without an API key, they do not work. Usage is billed by the AI provider. See API keys and costs.
Which AI services can I use?
#
You can use OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini and OpenAI-compatible services. Azure OpenAI is supported in AI Chat Copilot and the MCP server in Astah Professional and Astah UML version 12 and later.
Which programming languages does AI Code Reverse support?
#
AI Code Reverse supports Java, C#, Python, TypeScript, Go, C++, JavaScript, Kotlin, Swift, PHP, Ruby, Rust and other languages. It generates class diagrams and sequence diagrams.
How is the MCP server in Astah different from PlantUML or Mermaid MCP servers?
#
PlantUML and Mermaid MCP servers generate diagram source and images. The MCP server in Astah works on a real model, so diagrams stay consistent and you can keep editing them by hand or with AI. You can also import PlantUML into Astah through the MCP server.
Can I import PlantUML diagrams into Astah?
#
Yes. Through the MCP server in Astah Professional and Astah UML, your AI client can import PlantUML class, use case, sequence, activity and state machine diagrams into Astah, refine them in natural language, and export them back to PlantUML. The PlantUML Plugin also imports and exports PlantUML without AI.
Is my model content sent to the AI service?
#
Yes. Content you ask the AI to work with is sent from your computer to the AI service you choose. Astah has no built-in AI, and Change Vision does not receive any of this content. Follow your organization’s policy on confidential information. See Data and privacy.
Does AI in Astah run in the cloud?
#
Astah runs on your computer and has no built-in AI. The AI processing is done by the external AI service you choose. The MCP server works only while Astah is open, and Astah does not offer real-time co-editing between team members.
Can I try AI features for free?
#
Yes. Astah offers a 20-day free trial (40 days for Astah System Safety), and students can use Astah UML free of charge.
Is Astah Pro MCP an official Astah feature?
#
No. The AI features on this page are official features of Astah, developed by Change Vision. Astah Pro MCP is a community plugin developed and maintained by an Astah user, not by Change Vision.
